DRINKING WATER SOURCE PROTECTION IN ONTARIO

Ensuring safe, clean drinking water begins long before it reaches the tap. In Ontario, the Drinking Water Source Protection Program was developed under the Clean Water Act, 2006, to protect drinking water at its source.

Under this Program, municipalities are required to identify and manage risks to their drinking water supplies through the implementation of locally developed source protection plans which contain policies to manage activities that pose a significant drinking water threat (Threat).

Since 2016, Cambium Consulting & Engineering has been a trusted partner in the delivery of Source Water Protection Services on behalf of municipalities and other stakeholders across Ontario. Our comprehensive services support municipal implementation of local source protection plans and contribute to informed, defensible decision-making.  We understand that each municipality and source protection plan is unique and can tailor our services to meet local needs.

Our Source Water Protection Services

Our experienced team of Risk Management Officials and Risk Management Inspectors have the knowledge and required training to deliver the following services designed to protect municipal drinking water sources:

• Identifying activity that poses a significant drinking water threat;

• Reviewing development applications and issuing Restricted Land Use Notices;

• Conducting inspections;

• Negotiating and enforcing risk management plans and enforcing prohibition policies;

• Developing and delivering targeted education and outreach;

• Assessing vulnerable areas for new and existing municipal drinking water systems; and,

• Delivering clear, science-based advice to support defensible decision-making

Our Source Water Protection Services can strengthen local water security and can:

• Reduce municipal liability;

• Reduce water treatment costs;

• Reduce costs to clean up contaminated water

• Contribute to informed land use planning; and

• Increase public awareness and accountability of drinking water stewardship.
