Environmental Assessment (EA) – Long-Term Waste Management Strategy, Detour Lake Mine

Northern Ontario

Cambium is partnering with Agnico Eagle Mines Limited to conduct an Environmental Assessment (EA) under Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act. The goal: address the declining capacity of the landfill at Detour Lake Mine (DLM) in northern Ontario’s District of Cochrane.

Why This Matters

  • Current landfill: In service since 1983

  • Remaining capacity: ~55,000 m³ (as of Dec 2022)

  • Time left: About 8 years

  • Life of Mine: Projected at 30 years

  • Needed capacity: Minimum 150,000 m³ to support operations, workforce growth, and mine closure activities

Our Role

  • Prepared amended Terms of Reference (ToR), approved by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks in August 2024

  • Defined the EA framework, including:

    • Evaluation of alternative waste management solutions

    • A robust consultation plan

Engagement & Transparency

The EA process began in December 2024 and includes:

  • Indigenous community engagement

  • Local stakeholder consultations

  • Government agency coordination

  • Public notices and open houses led by Cambium

The Outcome

Cambium is helping Agnico Eagle develop a sustainable, compliant, and community-informed waste management solution to support the long-term operation of Canada’s largest gold mine.
